In today’s world, where concerns about food safety, environmental toxins, and public health are increasingly prevalent, grassroots organizations play a pivotal role in advocating for change. One of these organizations leading the charge is Moms Across America (MAA). Founded by Zen Honeycutt, MAA is a national coalition dedicated to empowering mothers and others with actions and solutions to create healthy families and communities.

How Moms Across America Began

The story of Moms Across America begins with Zen Honeycutt, a mother of three boys who faced numerous health challenges, including life-threatening allergies, autism symptoms, and asthma. Determined to find solutions, Zen discovered that switching her family to a GMO-free and organic diet led to remarkable improvements in her children’s health. By changing their diets, she was able to reduce her sons’ critically high food allergies drastically and in turn, remove the risk of hospitalizations and the need for daily medications. Her personal triumph ignited a passion within her to share this knowledge with other parents facing similar struggles.

In 2012, Zen’s commitment to raising awareness about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and toxins in the food supply intensified, especially after the defeat of California’s Proposition 37, a ballot initiative aimed at labeling GMOs. Recognizing the need for a broader platform to educate and unite mothers, Zen founded Moms Across America. The organization’s motto, “Empowered Moms, Healthy Kids,” reflects its dedication to informing and mobilizing parents to advocate for safer food and environmental practices.

Why Moms?

Quoting MAA, “Because we buy 85% of the food! It’s up to us!  If we don’t buy it, they can’t sell it!  Plus, Moms are unstoppable and our only special interest is our family.  Moms across America have seen rising health risks associated with toxins in our environment, especially in the food we feed our children.  We want the ability to know what is in our food to care best for our families.”

Mission and Activities

Moms Across America’s mission is to educate and empower mothers and others with actions and solutions to create healthy communities. The organization focuses on several key areas:

Raising Awareness About GMOs and Pesticides

MAA provides information on the potential health risks associated with GMOs and the use of pesticides like glyphosate in agriculture. By disseminating scientific studies, personal testimonials, and educational materials, MAA equips parents with the knowledge to make informed choices about the food they provide to their families.

Advocating for Transparent Food Labeling

Transparency in food labeling is a cornerstone of MAA’s efforts. The organization campaigns for clear labeling of GMO products, enabling consumers to make choices aligned with their health preferences and values. MAA states that “62 other countries have either labeled or banned GMOs, 34 countries ban or restrict glyphosate. Why not America?”

Promoting Organic and Regenerative Farming

MAA supports agricultural practices that prioritize environmental sustainability and human health. By collaborating with farmers and other organizations, MAA advocates for a shift towards organic and regenerative farming methods that reduce reliance on harmful chemicals.

Community Engagement and Education

Understanding the power of community, MAA encourages, organizes, and attends local events  (almost 200 last year) like 4th of July parades, movie nights, potlucks, and educational workshops. These gatherings cultivate discussions on health, nutrition, and environmental issues, building a network of informed and proactive individuals.

Policy Advocacy

MAA actively engages in policy discussions at local, state, and national levels. By organizing petitions, attending hearings, and meeting with legislators, the organization strives to influence policies that protect public health and promote environmental stewardship.

The Impact of Moms Across America

Since its inception, Moms Across America has made significant strides in advocating for healthier food systems and environments. Some notable achievements include:

  • Nationwide Reach: MAA has established a presence in all 50 states, with over 600 leaders organizing more than 1,000 community events. This extensive network amplifies the organization’s ability to effect change at both grassroots and national levels.
  • Pioneering Glyphosate Testing: MAA initiated the first consumer-funded glyphosate testing in the United States, bringing attention to the prevalence of this herbicide in food products and its potential health implications. This initiative has spurred further research and policy discussions regarding pesticide use.
  • Influencing Retail Practices: Through persistent advocacy, MAA has successfully petitioned major retailers, like Costco, to remove products containing glyphosate from their shelves. These efforts have prompted companies to reconsider product formulations and sourcing practices.
  • Educational Resources: MAA provides a wealth of resources, including articles, videos, and webinars, to educate the public on topics related to GMOs, pesticides, and organic living. These materials empower individuals to make informed decisions and advocate for their families’ health.
  • Global Collaboration: Recognizing that food safety and environmental health are global concerns, MAA collaborates with international organizations through its sister project, Mothers Across the World. This partnership fosters the exchange of knowledge and strategies to foster healthy habits and practices worldwide.
